Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA) (15)

In November 2014, several consumer groups wrote to the U.S. House Financial Services Committee expressing “strong opposition to H.R. 5446 [by U.S. Reps. Ed Royce (R-CA) and Rubem Hinojosa D-TX)], the misleadingly-named ‘Facilitating Access to Credit Act of 2014.'”

The letter said that the “bill would unnecessarily allow credit bureaus to be exempt from coverage by the Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA). This would be a dangerous mistake. CROA is a vital and important consumer protection law. There is no need to weaken CROA to allow the promotion of credit monitoring products that are of dubious value and that have been the subject of highly deceptive marketing as revealed by law enforcement actions and Congress’s own findings.”
