Overview
The Driver’s Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) was enacted in 1994 in response to the state departments of motor vehicles’s (“DMV”) practices of selling or disclosing drivers’ personal information, which led to certain unfortunate consequences. The DPPA is a federal law that limits the disclosure of “personal information” obtained from state departments of motor vehicles (“DMV”) unless the recipient has a use permitted by the Act. Many states have enacted similar legislation further regulating this data.
This interactive, self-paced e-learning program was developed to help employees understand the personally identifiable information that is regulated under the DPPA, prohibitions on disclosure and use of PII, those instances where data originating from the Department of Motor Vehicles can be used, and how compliance with the DPPA is enforced, and mention important state driver’s privacy laws.
