CDIA members empower economic opportunity every day. Our consumer reporting agency (CRA) members help facilitate home, student, and car loans; they conduct background checks to keep workplaces, apartments, and volunteer places safe; they prevent fraud in the public and private sectors; they help law enforcement locate victims, witnesses, and fugitives; and much more. CRAs are good stewards of the data they manage, not just because it’s the law, but because it’s the right thing to do. CRAs access, use, maintenance, and sharing of consumer information is governed by strong business standards and is overseen by a number of federal, state, and private agencies and parties. This multi-layered regulatory and enforcement environment protects consumers, limits the sharing of information for permissible purposes only and imposes strict requirements on accuracy, calls for consumer access and correction.
