Data brokers (44)

Employment Screening (20)

Federal Trade Commission (FTC) (2)

In September 2022, Certree, “a document anti-fraud and data security company,” filed a petition to the FTC asking it to “investigate the ‘anti-competitive and anti-consumer practices’ of major data brokers Equifax and Experian.” This is according to a press release issued by the company. Certree adds that “[a]s part of their employment and income verification services, these two data brokers collect and sell tens of millions of records detailing everyday workers’ salary and employment histories.”

The press release uses language similar to that of FTC Chair Lina Khan and CFPB Chair Rohit Chopra, who regularly express concern about “data brokers” and their alleged market power.
