In September 2023, the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovation of the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform held a hearing, How are Federal Agencies Harnessing Artificial Intelligence? In calling the hearing, the chair, Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), said that the committee will “explore how agencies are using AI now and the future use cases they envision.  Potential risks in federal agency adoption of AI will be discussed, along with the adequacy of safeguards being put in place to protect individual privacy and ensure the fair and equal treatment of all citizens by their government.”

The hearing had three witnesses, Dr. Arati Prabhaker, Director, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy; Dr. Craig Martell, Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer, Department of Defense; and Mr. Eric Hysen, Chief Information Officer, Department of Homeland Security.
