Artificial Intelligence (71)

In October 2023, 16 Democratic members of the U.S. House and Senate sent a letter to President Biden urging that the White House’s forthcoming executive order on artificial intelligence must encode protections included in the Biden administration’s “AI Bill of Rights” document that the White House issued in October 2022. The White House also issued a statement with the issuance of the AI Bill of Rights.

President Biden shared a preview of the forthcoming E.O.  during a meeting last month of the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. In that preview, he reiterated the need to balance opportunities and risks associated with the technology.

Democrats signing the letter include Sens. Edward Markey (D-MA.), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD.), Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Cory Booker (D-NJ). Reps. Pramila Jayapal (D- WA), Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), Lori Trahan (D-MA), Yvette Clark (D-MA), and Cori Bush (D-MO) also signed the letter.

The AI Bill of Rights stands on five pillars: Safe and Effective Systems, Algorithmic Discrimination Protections, Data Privacy, Notice and Explanation, and Human Alternatives, Consideration, and Fallback.
