In 2021, California Assemblymember Ed Chau (D-Monterey Park) introduced A.B. 13, the Automated Decision System Accountability Act of 2021, and an accompanying fact sheet. When re-introduced in 2021, the bill was identical to Chau’s bill from the prior session, A.B. 2269 (2020). Chau is the chair of the Select Committee on Emerging Technologies and Innovation and the chair of Privacy and Consumer Protection.
In March 2021, CDIA signed on to a coalition letter against A.B. 13, a letter organized by the California Chamber. Following amendments to the bill on March 25, 2021, there was a second coalition letter organized by the California Chamber, and CDIA was also a signatory to that April 2, letter.
